What Panjeeri is
Panjeeri is the roasted flour, nut and gum crumble served in winter and after childbirth in many homes. The tradition is food. It is not a medical recovery plan, and a shop should not pretend it is.
How people in Pakistan use it
Eat a spoon with warm milk, or as your house already serves it. The shakar versions are sweetened with sugar. The sugar-free versions are the ones to read carefully if you are avoiding sugar. Both are still rich foods.
Choosing a pack
Choose shakar or sugar-free, then 300 g or 500 g. Four combinations, four prices. 300 g is a gift or a short tin. 500 g is the tin that stays in the winter cupboard.
A plain caution
Dense food. Not suitable as a casual snack if you are limiting calories, and not a substitute for postnatal care. Nuts and edible gum are in the mix, so allergies matter.
